President Barack Obama signed the Outdoor REC Act into law Thursday (Dec. 8).
According to a report in RVIA Today Express, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) has been a strong advocate for the legislation, which directs the U.S. departments of Commerce and Labor to analyze and report on the full economic impact of the outdoor recreation economy. This invaluable data will be critical in helping federal, state and local governments make informed policy and business decisions that impact outdoor recreation enthusiasts, including RV owners.
“Policymakers at all levels of government need this information to properly invest in recreation infrastructure to allow current and next generation RVers to enjoy the iconic federal lands and campgrounds for many years to come,” said Jay Landers, RVIA’s vice president of government affairs.
RVIA has been advocating on this issue for several years and made it a central topic in discussions with legislators during the association’s Capitol Hill Advocacy Day this past June. RVIA Chairman Bob Parish cited the efforts of the 73 RV industry executives taking part in Advocacy Day as a crucial step in building support for the legislation.
“RVIA members helped illustrate the economic impact of the RV and outdoor recreation industries to more elected officials on Capitol Hill than ever before,” he said. “That effort resonated with the passing of the REC Act in both houses in Congress. The bill has now been approved by the President. Rest assured RVIA and the Government Affairs team will continue to follow this effort through implementation.”
Passage of this bill through Congress would not have been possible without the support of the House and Senate RV Caucus members who co-sponsored the bill.
“RVIA applauds the House and Senate for the passage of the REC Act,” RVIA President Frank Hugelmeyer said. “This critical legislation will provide legislators and federal officials with the data needed to make informed decisions on outdoor recreation issues and initiatives.”
