Banner Year for RV Industry

The Reston-Va.-based Recreation Vehicle Industry Association released its December shipment and year-end figures Monday and it’s official — 2014 was a banner year for the industry.
RV shipments reached an eight-year high of 356,735 units in 2014, a gain of 11.1 percent over the previous year. Last year was the fifth consecutive annual increase for the RV industry.
According to the RVIA, total wholesale shipments to retailers of all RVs increased to 26,736 units in the December survey of manufacturers, up 23.3 percent compared to December 2013.
It was the largest December total in nine years. Towable RV shipments, which jumped 27 percent to 23,851 units in December compared to the same month a year prior, led the way.
And it beat a good December total from 2013, according to Kevin Broom, RVIA spokesman.
Interestingly, the final numbers beat University of Michigan professor Richard Curtin’s mid-year prediction, too. They also beat 2007 numbers, which Richard Coon, RVIA president, once called the true record year, since 2005 and 2006 numbers were influenced by sales of trailers to areas that were hurt by Hurricane Katrina.
“People are out there buying RVs,” Broom said. “The reason for that is the lifestyle. There are really good, innovative, interesting designs out there that appeal to people looking to buy.”
